In the 33rd minute, Murillo smashed the ball home from close range after a corner, but the goal was followed by immediate Liverpool protests as Dan Ndoye was standing in an offside position. The controversy continued moments later when Forest thought they had a second, only for Igor Jesus’s celebration to be cut short as referee Andy Madley ruled he had handled the ball. Replays were inconclusive, adding to the sense of injustice and frustration swirling around the stadium.
Any hope of a second-half Liverpool fightback was extinguished in brutal fashion. Just 39 seconds after the restart, Nicolo Savona tapped in a simple pass to double Forest’s lead. The final blow came from the in-form Morgan Gibbs-White, who added a third in the 79th minute to seal a memorable victory for Sean Dyche’s side.
The match also marked a difficult return for Liverpool’s iconic goalkeeper, Alisson, who was handed the starting spot after a month out. His comeback was far from a joyful one, as he picked the ball out of his net three times behind a disorganized defence.
The defeat raises serious questions about Liverpool’s credentials. Having now lost as many games as they have won this season, the team that looked unstoppable last year appears vulnerable and unsure. For a jubilant Nottingham Forest, however, it was a tactical masterclass from Sean Dyche, whose team executed their plan perfectly to dismantle the champions on their own turf.
