OAP Do2dtun Criticizes South African Singer Tyla Over VMA Afrobeats Award Acceptance Speech

Do2dtun calls out Tyla for accepting Afrobeats award despite claiming to represent Amapiano genre.

Nigerian on-air personality, Do2dtun, has publicly criticized South African singer Tyla following her acceptance speech at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards (VMA). Tyla, who won the Best Afrobeats Award for her hit song “Water,” sparked controversy after questioning the grouping of all African artists under the Afrobeats category during her speech. She had been nominated alongside prominent Nigerian artists such as Davido, Burna Boy, Tems, and Ayra Starr.

In response to Tyla’s remarks, Do2dtun slammed the singer for accepting an award that she claimed did not represent her music style, as she identifies with Amapiano, a South African genre, rather than Afrobeats.

“Aunty @tyla aka ‘I am not Afrobeats, I am Amapiano.’ We have heard you, but your song ‘Water’ isn’t Amapiano either. If you thought you were categorized in the wrong category, you should have given the award back or denounced the nomination,” Do2dtun wrote.

He further criticized Tyla for accepting an award that didn’t align with her artistic identity, adding, “You clearly took an award that didn’t represent you or your sound from that statement you made.”

Do2dtun also used the opportunity to highlight the broader misunderstanding of the genre, stressing that “Afrobeat is Afrobeat, not Afrobeats,” a point of confusion that often arises in international music circles.

The incident has since sparked debate online about genre representation and the categorization of African music on global platforms.
