Nigerian Music Star Claims Colleague Stole Album Concept, Prompting a Complete Re-Record

The Nigerian music industry, often embroiled in controversies over intellectual property theft, has witnessed yet another troubling incident. Stanley Omah Didia, widely known as Omah Lay, recently opened up about a heartbreaking experience that compelled him to redo his entire album.

Speaking on the Zach Sang Show, Omah Lay revealed that a fellow artist, with whom he had shared the concept for his upcoming album, allegedly stole the idea and used it to create his own project. The unnamed colleague had initially approached Omah Lay for a collaboration, and during their discussions, Omah Lay shared details about the new direction he planned to take with his music.

However, months later, the colleague released an album featuring the very sound and ideas that Omah Lay had shared in confidence. “He came to me, and I accepted for us to collaborate. Of course, it’s an artist that I love. And I told him where I’m headed with the sound. Five months later, he put out an album with exactly all the same sound that I shared with him,” Omah Lay recounted.

This unexpected betrayal forced Omah Lay to scrap his original plans and re-record his album from scratch. Despite the setback, the singer remains optimistic about the outcome, stating, “I had to go back and remake my album, which is actually going to be the greatest album of all time in Afrobeats history.”

Omah Lay’s experience highlights the ongoing challenges within the music industry, where creative ideas are often vulnerable to exploitation, even among peers.
