Onana Fires Back at Matic After Lyon Spat: “At Least I’ve Lifted Trophies at United”

Man Utd Keeper Defends Pre-Match Comments as Europa League Clash Heats Up

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has hit back at Lyon midfielder Nemanja Matic after the former Red Devil branded him “one of the worst goalkeepers in the club’s modern history” in a fiery pre-match exchange.

The war of words began when Onana, speaking ahead of Thursday’s Europa League quarter-final first leg in France, admitted that while Lyon would pose a challenge, United were “substantially better on paper.” Matic, who spent five years at Old Trafford, took exception to the remarks, suggesting the Cameroonian lacked the credibility to make such claims.

But Onana refused to back down, taking to social media to clarify his stance while delivering a pointed dig at Matic’s trophy-less United career.

“I would never be disrespectful to another club,” the 27-year-old wrote on X. “We focus on preparing a performance to make our fans proud. At least I’ve lifted trophies with the greatest club in the world. Some can’t say the same.”

The jab was a clear reference to Matic’s time at United, where the Serbian midfielder failed to win silverware between 2017 and 2022. Onana, meanwhile, lifted the Carabao Cup in his debut season under Erik ten Hag.

Despite the tension, Onana acknowledged Lyon’s threat, adding: “We know tomorrow will be a difficult game against a strong opponent.”

The spat has added extra spice to an already intriguing European tie, with United looking to bounce back from recent struggles and Lyon aiming to prove Onana’s “on paper” assessment wrong. Fans will be watching closely to see if the exchange fuels performances on the pitch—or more fireworks off it.
