Osimhen Inspires Nigeria to AFCON Semifinals with Goal in Win Over Algeria

Striker’s Header Breaks Deadlock Before Assist Seals 2-0 Victory, Setting Up Morocco Clash

Nigeria advanced to the Africa Cup of Nations semifinals with a composed and authoritative 2-0 victory over Algeria on Saturday, setting up a blockbuster clash with tournament hosts Morocco.

The Super Eagles, who dominated from start to finish, broke through shortly after halftime when Victor Osimhen powered home a header for his 35th international goal.

Just minutes later, Akor Adams swept home a second after being teed up by Osimhen, effectively sealing the contest.

“We played with confidence and executed our plan perfectly,” said Nigeria coach Éric Chelle. “The players deserve all the credit for their focus and spirit.”

Algeria, who failed to register a shot on target throughout the match, were overwhelmed by Nigeria’s intensity and organization. The result ends their unbeaten run in the tournament and avenges Nigeria’s semifinal loss to the Desert Foxes in 2019.

Nigeria will now face a Morocco side still riding the momentum of a home crowd after their win over Cameroon. The semifinal promises to be a tactical battle between two of the tournament’s most impressive sides.

The other semifinal will feature Senegal against either Egypt or Ivory Coast, meaning the path to a fourth AFCON title is now clearly in sight for a Nigerian team that looks increasingly like genuine contenders.
