Maresca Banned to the Stands but Hails “Instrumental” Captain James Ahead of Pivotal Premier League Test
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca delivered a major boost to fans on Wednesday, confirming that star playmaker Cole Palmer is finally fit to start and play a full 90 minutes after a frustrating battle with injuries.
Palmer’s season has been disrupted by a groin issue and a broken toe, limiting him to substitute roles and brief appearances. However, Maresca revealed a carefully managed comeback plan has now run its course, with the midfielder building his stamina through incremental increases in playing time.
“I think he is ready for 90 minutes,” Maresca said, addressing reporters ahead of Saturday’s crucial home match against Aston Villa. “He already played one hour, then more than 70. The progression is there.”
The injury news brightened further with the announcement that two more players are set to return. Striker Liam Delap has recovered from a shoulder injury, and winger Estevao is back in contention after a muscle problem. “I’m very happy for both,” the Italian manager added.
Maresca, however, will have a restricted view of the game. He received a touchline ban after collecting his third yellow card of the season. Reflecting on his suspensions, he noted, “Yes, in almost 100 games, I’ve been suspended three times… unfortunately I will be in the stands.” He expressed full confidence in his coaching staff to manage from the sidelines.
Amid the returns, Maresca reserved special praise for captain Reece James, whose influence has surged after overcoming his own lengthy injury struggles. James scored a brilliant free-kick in the recent 2-2 draw with Newcastle United.
“He is growing in terms of leadership,” Maresca said of his captain. “When he is fit, he is one of the best players we have, no doubt. He can be here as a leader.”
The returning players will be thrown into a stern test against an in-form Aston Villa side, who sit third in the table, seven points ahead of fourth-placed Chelsea. Unai Emery’s team arrives with the momentum of ten consecutive wins across all competitions.
Acknowledging the challenge, Maresca said, “They are doing fantastic… It’s very clear what they do. They are, in this moment, also full of confidence. That is very important in a football team.”
Saturday’s match at Stamford Bridge now shapes up as a pivotal moment in Chelsea’s season, with a key player back to full strength and their manager trusting his squad to deliver from afar.
