The Blues’ star man scored a superb goal but was left exasperated by his team’s costly lapses in concentration, insisting “we’re not coming here to be a learning curve.”
A frustrated Cole Palmer delivered a blunt assessment of Chelsea’s 3-1 Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich, pinpointing a lack of focus and poor game management as the reasons for their collapse at the Allianz Arena.
Despite a bright start and a moment of brilliance from Palmer himself, Chelsea’s return to Europe’s elite competition after a two-and-a-half-year absence ended in disappointment. An unfortunate Trevoh Chalobah own goal and a clinical double from Harry Kane sealed a deserved victory for the German giants.
Palmer, who capped a slick team move with a cool first-half finish, was left to rue what might have been. Speaking to TNT Sports after the match, the England international didn’t mince words. “Yeah, it’s frustrating. We deserved more,” Palmer stated. “We started well, had early chances but when you make mistakes at the highest level it’s difficult. There was a lack of concentration, not managing the moments correct.”
His goal, a sharp one-two with Malo Gusto finished past the legendary Manuel Neuer, had briefly brought Chelsea level after Kane’s penalty. Palmer thought he had a second late on, only for it to be ruled out by VAR for offside.
While acknowledging the match as a “good learning curve,” Palmer was adamant that moral victories are not the goal. “We showed we can play against one of the best teams… but we’re not coming here to be a learning curve. We showed we want to compete,” he emphasized.
Manager Enzo Maresca struck a more measured tone, praising the overall performance but acknowledging the need to avoid costly errors. “I think overall the performance was quite good. We started very well for 20 minutes, creating chances,” Maresca said. “When we conceded the goal, we can avoid that kind of goal.”
The task now for Chelsea is to quickly regroup, with a crucial Premier League trip to face Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday.
