Manchester United Legend Believes Newcastle Star Should Target Elite Clubs Like Real Madrid or Liverpool
Manchester United icon Paul Scholes has weighed in on the transfer speculation surrounding Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak, suggesting the Swedish striker is too talented to settle for a move to Arsenal this summer. Isak, who has been a standout performer for Newcastle this season, has been heavily linked with a switch to the Emirates Stadium as Mikel Arteta looks to bolster his attacking options.
The 24-year-old forward has been in scintillating form, netting 19 goals and providing five assists in 28 appearances across all competitions. His performances have caught the eye of several top clubs, including Arsenal, who are reportedly prepared to pay over €120 million to secure his services. However, Newcastle are reluctant to part ways with their star man, who played a key role in their Carabao Cup semi-final victory over the Gunners earlier this season, outclassing Arsenal’s defensive duo William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes.
Despite Arsenal’s interest, Scholes believes Isak should set his sights higher than a move to north London. Speaking on the latest Overlap Fan Debate, the former Manchester United midfielder argued that Isak has the potential to join one of Europe’s elite clubs.
“Everyone loves him [Isak], but I don’t see a possibility of him going to Arsenal,” Scholes said. “He needs to go bigger and better. We’re talking about Real Madrid here, Liverpool need a centre forward. I think Arsenal would be an option, but they would be down the list of options.”
Scholes acknowledged Newcastle’s progress as a club but suggested that Isak’s ambitions should extend beyond staying at St. James’ Park or moving to Arsenal. “He’s at Newcastle, a really good team, a brilliant team, but they’re not going to win league titles. That’s the next stage of his career,” he added.
The United legend also pointed to Liverpool, Manchester City, and Real Madrid as more suitable destinations for a player of Isak’s caliber. “I think it would be a risk to go to Arsenal and do the same thing. Liverpool have got a much better chance, Man City and Real Madrid the same,” Scholes explained.
While Scholes admitted that Isak would elevate Arsenal’s attack, he believes the striker’s potential warrants a move to a club with a stronger chance of competing for major trophies. “I agree he takes Arsenal to another level; he would be brilliant, and he could possibly get you over the line. But I just think there’s bigger and better in him,” he concluded.
As the summer transfer window approaches, the race for Isak’s signature is expected to heat up. While Arsenal remain keen, Scholes’ comments highlight the growing belief that the Newcastle star could aim for a club with a proven track record of winning silverware. Whether Isak stays at Newcastle, joins Arsenal, or secures a blockbuster move to one of Europe’s giants, his next career step will be one of the most talked-about stories of the summer.
