Manchester United legend backs Amad after Europa League heroics, believes Van Nistelrooy is ready to lead his own team.
Amad Diallo became the hero of Old Trafford on Thursday night, scoring both goals in Manchester United’s 2-0 Europa League victory over PAOK. His standout performance won praise from United icon Paul Scholes, who is now calling for Amad to start in Sunday’s Premier League match against Leicester City. Scholes also weighed in on interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy’s future, suggesting he should consider a head coaching role instead of remaining as an assistant under the club’s new leadership.
For the 22-year-old Amad, this week’s brace marked his first double for United and took his goal count to three this season. Scholes, impressed by the Ivorian’s impact, said the display “warrants” a place in the starting lineup, pending a minor knock Amad picked up late in the game.
Scholes also voiced his thoughts on Van Nistelrooy’s managerial path, urging him to think beyond an assistant position and step into a lead role, potentially elsewhere if not at United. “I think he should be a manager,” Scholes said. “He just looks like he is made to be one…better than an assistant.”
Van Nistelrooy, who rejoined United as an assistant under Erik ten Hag last summer, managed PSV Eindhoven prior to his return, citing a lack of board support as his reason for leaving in 2023. For Scholes, his former teammate’s experience and leadership make him a strong candidate for a managerial position.
