City Boss Issues Title Warning After FA Cup Win as Reds End Champions’ Dominance
Pep Guardiola delivered a gracious but defiant message to newly-crowned Premier League champions Liverpool after Manchester City kept their own trophy hopes alive with an FA Cup semi-final victory over Nottingham Forest.
While Anfield erupted in celebration following Liverpool’s 5-1 demolition of Tottenham – a result that secured their second league title in five years and snapped City’s four-season stranglehold – Guardiola’s side were busy booking their place at Wembley. Teenage star Rico Lewis fired City ahead after just two minutes before Josko Gvardiol sealed a 2-0 win, setting up a final showdown with Crystal Palace next month.
Forest threatened repeatedly, rattling the woodwork on multiple occasions, but couldn’t breach City’s defense. When informed of Liverpool’s title confirmation post-match, Guardiola was magnanimous in praise but clear in his intentions.
“Before we start, on behalf of myself and the club, we want to congratulate Liverpool for their Premier League victory,” the City boss stated. “Well deserved, no doubt about that – they’re a fantastic team.”
Then came the warning shot: “Give us one year. Like it happened the last four years, hopefully next season we can do better and compete until the end.”
City’s unusually inconsistent campaign saw them fade from the title race as Liverpool surged ahead, with Arsenal also failing to sustain their challenge. But Guardiola’s message leaves no doubt – the battle for English football’s top prize is far from over.
As Liverpool’s fans savor their hard-earned triumph, the Etihad hierarchy are already plotting their response. The stage is set for another epic Premier League showdown in 2024/25.
