City Boss Focused on Future and Historic Achievements
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has dismissed the notion that no other manager can win the Premier League while he’s in charge. He insists he still has unfinished business at the club. If City beats West Ham at the Etihad, they will make history as the first team to win four consecutive Premier League titles, marking their sixth in seven years.
Despite rumors that Guardiola might leave before his contract ends after setting numerous records, he is determined to return next season. “Yes, I have a contract,” Guardiola confirmed in his final pre-match press conference of the season. “I want to be here next year, yes.”
Guardiola also rejected the idea that City’s dominance is bad for the Premier League. “If the narrative was that I was winning by 20 points I would say ‘yes, I’m a genius, I’m so good.’ But it’s not. The Premier Leagues we have won the others could have won – and Arsenal can win this one.”
Reflecting on the competition, Guardiola maintained his respect for Liverpool, stating, “A win is a win. The winners smell good, and everyone wants to copy that. There is a lot of work behind it – a lot. Nothing you have done in the past gives you the right to win. It’s completely the opposite.”
Guardiola highlighted the collective effort behind City’s success, emphasizing the importance of all departments. “It’s a lot of work for all departments – the backroom staff, the medical department, the office department, how they care about those few, few inches. It is ridiculous how good the balance is. Otherwise you cannot be where we are.”
Guardiola, who finished third in his first season as City boss, has seen Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool take the title in 2020. City has clinched two of their previous titles under Guardiola at Liverpool’s expense on the final day.
This year, City is aware that Arsenal could snatch the title if they falter against West Ham and Arsenal wins against Everton at the Emirates. Guardiola acknowledged the challenge, saying, “Everybody knows what we are playing for. None of us will get the chance to win four-in-a-row again, it is impossible. It won’t happen again in our life. We have to live it, we have to enjoy it.”
Reflecting on City’s historic achievements, Guardiola noted their 100-point season in 2018, their domestic Treble in 2019, and their Treble success last year. This Saturday, City will face United in the FA Cup Final, with a chance to achieve a double Double.
Guardiola attributes City’s success to his squad’s willingness to challenge him. “We’ve had conflicts this season, between them, between me. It is normal. It is how they solve it, that is the key.”
Looking ahead to the West Ham match, Guardiola is cautious. “West Ham, especially the four players they have up front, can create something unexpected. That is what I am concerned with at the moment.”
