Manager commits to two more years, vowing to bounce back from challenging run of form
Manchester City has announced that Pep Guardiola has signed a two-year contract extension, ensuring his stay at the Etihad Stadium until at least the summer of 2026. This commitment comes as the club endures a rare slump, with four consecutive losses across competitions.
Guardiola’s Gratitude and Focus on Recovery
Guardiola, who joined City in 2016, expressed his deep connection to the club and his determination to turn things around.
“Manchester City means so much to me,” he said. “This is my ninth season here, and we’ve shared so many amazing moments. I’m happy to be staying for another two years. I have everything a manager could wish for, and I appreciate the trust from the owners, the players, and our incredible fans.”
Acknowledging the team’s recent poor performances, Guardiola admitted the challenge motivated him to stay.
“I felt I couldn’t leave now, especially after four defeats. It’s a tough period, but I believe we deserve the chance to bounce back and reclaim our dominance.”
Historic Success and Recent Struggles
Under Guardiola’s leadership, City has achieved unprecedented success, including six Premier League titles and the historic treble in the 2022/23 season. However, the current campaign has presented unexpected challenges.
The defending champions are five points behind Liverpool in the league after losses to Tottenham, Bournemouth, Sporting CP, and Brighton. The team’s struggles have been compounded by the loss of Ballon d’Or winner Rodri, sidelined for the season with an ACL injury.
Despite these setbacks, the club’s hierarchy has reinforced their faith in Guardiola with the new deal.
Looking Ahead
City returns from the international break to face Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, with Guardiola determined to recalibrate his team’s trajectory.
“Our target is to recover stability and consistency,” Guardiola said. “We’ve made mistakes, but we’ve also learned lessons. Now it’s time to apply them and move forward.”
With 18 trophies already won during his tenure, Guardiola remains focused on adding to his legacy while addressing immediate challenges.
“The treble was a dream come true, but we’re not finished. We’ll fight to turn this situation around and aim for more success,” he vowed.
The contract extension also signals continuity in the club’s vision, with Guardiola now set to outlast his tenures at Barcelona and Bayern Munich combined. It underscores Manchester City’s commitment to their manager as they navigate both current hurdles and future ambitions.
