Pep Guardiola Shortlisted for Brazil Job After Dorival Junior’s Sacking

Seleção Eye Foreign Manager for 2026 World Cup Push, with Guardiola, Ancelotti, and Jorge Jesus in the Frame

Pep Guardiola has emerged as a surprise candidate to become Brazil’s next manager after the five-time World Cup winners sacked Dorival Junior following a humiliating 4-1 defeat to rivals Argentina.

The heavy loss in World Cup qualifying left Brazil languishing in fourth place, 10 points behind leaders Argentina, intensifying pressure on the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) to make a change. Dorival Junior, appointed just over a year ago, was dismissed after five defeats in 14 matches—a record deemed unacceptable for the football-mad nation.

Now, reports suggest Guardiola is on a three-man shortlist to take over, alongside Real Madrid’s Carlo Ancelotti and Al Hilal’s Jorge Jesus. The CBF is reportedly prioritizing a foreign coach to lead the Seleção into the 2026 World Cup in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada.

Ancelotti & Jesus Also in Contention

Ancelotti, long admired by Brazilian officials, was approached in both 2022 and 2023 but remained committed to Real Madrid. His contract runs until 2026, though renewed interest from Brazil could test his resolve.

Jorge Jesus, currently managing Saudi giants Al Hilal, has previous experience in Brazilian football but had a rocky relationship with star forward Neymar. However, the Portuguese coach has recently softened his stance, potentially smoothing the way for a return.

Guardiola’s International Ambitions

The Manchester City boss has previously expressed interest in international management, admitting last year: “I would like to train a national team for a World Cup or a European Championship… I would like that experience.”

Despite signing a contract extension with City earlier this season, Guardiola has faced one of his toughest campaigns yet, with the club sitting fifth in the Premier League. While they remain in contention for the FA Cup and Club World Cup, the allure of leading Brazil—a dream job for many managers—could tempt him.

However, CBF president Ednaldo Rodrigues denied previous contact with Guardiola, telling ESPN Brasil in November: “Although he is one of the greatest coaches in the world, there was no involvement from the CBF to make any contact.”

A Critical Decision for Brazil

With World Cup qualifying slipping away, Brazil’s next managerial appointment will be crucial. Will they finally land Ancelotti? Could Guardiola be tempted away from club football? Or will Jorge Jesus get the nod?

For now, Guardiola remains focused on City’s season, but the speculation adds another layer of intrigue to what has already been a dramatic year in football.
