Manager Demands Smaller, More Manageable Team Despite Recent Big-Money Signings
Pep Guardiola has stunned Manchester City by threatening to leave the club unless the board agrees to reduce the size of his squad. The shock ultimatum came just moments after City secured a crucial 3-1 Premier League win over Bournemouth at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday, with goals from Omar Marmoush, Bernardo Silva, and Nico Gonzalez boosting their Champions League qualification hopes.
But instead of celebrating, Guardiola made his frustrations public, insisting he can no longer work with an oversized roster. “I don’t want 24, 25, or 26 players when everyone is fit. I told the club—I don’t want that,” the Catalan coach declared. “If we have injuries, so be it! We’ll bring in academy players and manage. Make a smaller squad next season, and I’ll stay. Otherwise, it’s impossible for my soul.”
The demand comes despite City’s heavy January spending, including a €75 million deal for Marmoush and a €60 million move for Gonzalez. But rather than seeking more reinforcements, Guardiola now wants a major clear-out.
With Kevin De Bruyne already confirmed to leave when his contract expires, doubts linger over the futures of Jack Grealish and Bernardo Silva. Guardiola’s public stance suggests more high-profile exits could follow as City scramble to keep their legendary manager happy.
Will the club comply with his demands, or could this be the beginning of the end for Guardiola’s reign in Manchester?
