“I said six months ago, when all the clubs accused us of doing something wrong, that I would stay if we were relegated,” Guardiola said. “If we are in the Conference [League], we will come back to the Premier League. I knew it then, and I feel it now.”
The Catalan manager, who has guided City to five Premier League titles, hinted that his decision to extend his contract was partly motivated by a desire to avoid speculation about his future. “I don’t want next season in September, October, or November to be all about, ‘It’s the last year of Pep.’ I don’t want to be in that position,” he explained.
