Foden Wins PFA Player of the Year; Palmer Secures Young Player of the Year Honors
Manchester City star Phil Foden has been named the 2023-24 PFA Player of the Year, while Chelsea’s Cole Palmer took home the Young Player of the Year award.
Foden, 24, delivered a stellar season, scoring 27 goals and providing 12 assists across all competitions, playing a key role in helping Manchester City secure their fourth consecutive Premier League title. He edged out teammate Erling Haaland for the top honor.
Foden’s remarkable season also saw him named Premier League Player of the Season and FWA Men’s Footballer of the Year. He expressed his gratitude in a statement: “To win this award is something very special, and it is one that I am very proud of and grateful for. To be recognized this way by your fellow professionals means everything, and I would like to thank everyone who voted for me.”
The PFA Player of the Year shortlist also included Arsenal’s Martin Odegaard, Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins, City’s Rodri, and Cole Palmer. Foden praised his Manchester City teammates, saying, “I also want to pay special thanks to Pep, the City coaches, and all my teammates as they help me try to get better every single day. I’d also like to congratulate Kyle, Rodri, and Erling on being voted into the PFA Team of the Year as it’s great to see their amazing quality recognized in such a way.”
Meanwhile, Palmer, who enjoyed a breakthrough season at Chelsea, was named the PFA Young Player of the Year.
The 22-year-old scored 27 goals, 22 of which came in the Premier League, and provided 15 assists during a challenging campaign for the London club. Despite Chelsea’s struggles, which included the dismissal of manager Mauricio Pochettino, Palmer emerged as a key figure, finishing as runner-up for the Premier League Golden Boot behind Haaland.
Palmer’s success came after a move from Manchester City in the summer of 2023, where he had made only a handful of appearances and failed to score a Premier League goal. His immediate impact at Stamford Bridge solidified his status as one of England’s brightest young talents.
Both Foden and Palmer also contributed to England’s deep run in Euro 2024, with Palmer scoring in the final, though Gareth Southgate’s side ultimately fell 2-1 to Spain.
