Someone has paid the price for injury-plagued Inter Miami‘s recent struggles.
The club on Thursday confirmed that manager Phil Neville had been fired a day after a 1-0 home loss to New York Red Bulls. The defeat is Inter Miami’s fourth in a row, a skid that has seen the three-year-old team fall to last place in Major League Soccer‘s Eastern Conference.
Neville out after less than three seasons in charge
Inter Miami owner David Beckham hired his former Manchester United teammate Neville in January 2021. Neville, who played for United and Everton in a 20-year Premier League career, took the MLS after nearly three years as the head coach of England‘s women’s team, and he guided Inter Miami to the last 16 of the U.S. Open Cup and the MLS Playoffs in 2022.
This season has been a different story. Inter Miami have won five games, drawn zero, and lost a league-high 10 times while posting the third-worst goal difference in the East (negative-5). Although the team plays a key U.S. Open Cup game in less than a week’s time, the poor league results convinced Beckham and ownership to act now.
Who will take over for Neville?
Rumors are linking former FC Barcelona and Mexico boss Tata Martino with the Inter Miami gig. Martino has expressed a willingness to manage in MLS again after a successful spell with Atlanta United, where he won the MLS Cup in 2018.
In the meatime, assistant coach and former Real Salt Lake star Javier Morales will take the reins for upcoming games, which include the U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal against USL Championship side Birmingham Legion on June 7.
