Pogba Set for Monaco Debut After 18-Month Absence

The former World Cup winner, cleared to play after a reduced doping ban, is in the squad for Saturday’s Ligue 1 match and could make his long-awaited return to football.

In a significant moment for one of football’s most talked-about careers, Paul Pogba is on the verge of his first competitive appearance for AS Monaco. The French club has named the midfielder in its squad for Saturday’s Ligue 1 match against Rennes, marking a potential end to an 18-month absence from the pitch for the 32-year-old.

Pogba’s journey back has been arduous. After joining Monaco on a free transfer in June, his return was delayed by a right ankle injury. His last competitive match was for Juventus in September 2023, and his career was thrown into uncertainty in February 2024 when he received a four-year ban for a positive doping test. That suspension was later reduced to 18 months on appeal, clearing the path for his return this season.

Monaco manager Sebastien Pocognoli expressed his enthusiasm for integrating the experienced player, highlighting the intangible qualities Pogba brings. “We try to help him reach his full potential so that the team comes out on top,” Pocognoli stated. He assured that Pogba’s famed technical skills remain intact, adding, “He hasn’t lost his vision or his technique.” The manager also pointed to Pogba’s “experience and leadership, both on and off the pitch,” as valuable assets for the squad.

This weekend could mark a pivotal new chapter for the 2018 World Cup winner, offering him a chance to resurrect his career after a prolonged and challenging period away from the game.
