Points Deduction Fuels South Africa’s World Cup Fire, Says Coach Broos

After a costly administrative error sees Bafana Bafana docked three points, the manager insists his team is more motivated than ever to secure qualification.

In a dramatic twist to their World Cup qualifying campaign, the South African national team has been hit with a three-point deduction by FIFA for fielding a suspended player six months ago. The penalty has knocked Bafana Bafana from the top of their group, but coach Hugo Broos believes the setback has only strengthened his squad’s resolve.

The deduction stems from a March victory over Lesotho, which has now been overturned to a 3-0 loss after midfielder Teboho Mokoena was played while ineligible. The bizarre administrative error and the lengthy delay in the ruling have left South Africa level on 14 points with group leaders Benin, but trailing on goal difference.

Despite the blow, Coach Broos remains defiantly optimistic. “There are no doubts, there have never been any doubts from my side,” Broos stated. “I believe in this group and I am sure that they will do everything in their power to win… If there is a team that deserves to go to the World Cup, it is South Africa.”

With their fate still in their own hands, South Africa now faces two crucial home games against Zimbabwe and Rwanda. Broos has pinpointed the upcoming match against Zimbabwe as potentially the most important of the campaign. A victory would put significant pressure on their rivals, including Benin, who face a much tougher away double-header against Rwanda and Nigeria.

The road to the 2026 World Cup has become more challenging, but the South African camp is channeling the frustration into a powerful source of motivation.
