Police Arrest 15 Suspects Linked to IPOB Shooting in Ebonyi State

The Police in Ebonyi State have announced the arrest of 15 individuals suspected to be involved in the shooting incident carried out by members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) on Tuesday at the new market and Ishieke axis of the state. The shooting occurred as the suspects enforced an order issued by IPOB, which mandated residents to stay indoors for seven days, from July 3 to 10.

Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Faleye Olayele, addressed reporters in Abakaliki and revealed that among the 15 suspects arrested from their hideouts were two herbalists identified as Okwudili Otozi and Nnenna Ali.

“The suspects have been terrorizing the state and were involved in attacking our area commander and setting our vehicle ablaze. On July 4, they arrived at Ishieke, firing sporadically. That was on Tuesday,” Olayele explained.

He further disclosed that the police apprehended the suspects while they were preparing for another attack on Friday. The arrest was made possible through valuable information received by the police.

“We recovered various arms and charms when we apprehended the suspects. This demonstrates the dedication of our officers to their duties,” Olayele stated, while warning all criminal elements to stay away from Ebonyi State.

However, during interviews with the press, one of the herbalists claimed that he was coerced into joining the gang.

“I was unaware that they intended to operate in Ebonyi. They came to me requesting medicine, and I provided it to them. Afterward, they forced me to join them in the bush for further preparations,” Otozi explained.

“I want to clarify that I was forced to accompany them after I gave them the medicine,” he added.

The arrest of the suspects and recovery of weapons and charms highlight the efforts of the police in curbing criminal activities in the state. The authorities remain committed to ensuring the safety and security of Ebonyi’s residents and urge the public to provide any information that can assist in maintaining peace and order.
