Official Match Centre states goalkeeper Mamardashvili “commits a foul challenge,” justifying the on-field reversal that led to a dramatic saved penalty.
The Premier League has officially confirmed the reasoning behind the controversial penalty awarded to Manchester City in their match against Liverpool, stating that VAR intervened to correct a “clear and obvious error” after goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili fouled Jeremy Doku.
The incident, which occurred in the early stages of the match, began with a costly mistake from Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate, who gifted possession to Doku inside his own penalty area. The City winger weaved around the challenging Mamardashvili and went down as he prepared to shoot. Referee Chris Kavanagh initially waved play on, but the Video Assistant Referee team recommended a review.
After consulting the pitchside monitor, Kavanagh overturned his decision. The Premier League’s official Match Centre account later tweeted the precise explanation, quoting the referee’s stadium announcement: “After review, the goalkeeper commits a foul challenge on the attacker. The final decision is penalty.”
The drama, however, was far from over. Liverpool’s goalkeeper instantly became the hero, diving to his right to spectacularly save Erling Haaland’s resulting spot-kick. Mamardashvili’s celebration was cut short before the half-hour mark, however, when Haaland headed City into the lead, ensuring the early controversy remained a central talking point of the match.
