Liverpool manager Arne Slot is facing the first major crisis of his tenure after a humiliating 3-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest sent the club spiraling to their sixth Premier League loss in just seven games.
The dismal start to the 2025-26 campaign is a stark contrast to Slot’s dream debut last season, where he succeeded the legendary Jürgen Klopp and immediately delivered a Premier League title. Now, after a summer spend of £450 million, the team appears to be moving backwards, sparking intense scrutiny and concern among fans and pundits alike.
“The wheels are coming off now for Arne Slot,” former Arsenal defender Martin Keown stated bluntly on BBC’s Final Score. “He has spent £450 million on players, and they are going backwards… It’s certainly a major problem for the manager. Unthinkable.”
Despite the alarming form, the consensus among analysts is that the club will not trigger a panic dismissal. Keown expressed doubt that a manager can win the league one year and be fired the next, a sentiment echoed by former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp.
“I look at Liverpool now, this is what I expected to happen last season,” Redknapp admitted on Sky Sports, referencing the challenge of following Klopp. He appealed for calm, noting the team’s “extraordinary” title win and the emotional toll of the transition.
“Right now, I think it’s a time for patience,” Redknapp urged. “They’ll be people… going crazy, [saying] ‘Sack the manager’. [Be] calm, take your time… it’s been the most difficult pre-season you can imagine for those players.”
While the calls for his job are growing louder from some quarters, Slot appears to be backed by a voice of reason from the punditry box, buying him precious time to halt the team’s startling fall from grace.
