New Manager Faces Dressing Room Doubts and Fan Backlash After Disastrous Start
Manchester United’s new manager, Ruben Amorim, is already under intense scrutiny just three months into his tenure at Old Trafford. Appointed on November 1 following the dismissal of Erik ten Hag, the 39-year-old Portuguese coach arrived with high expectations after a successful stint at Sporting Lisbon, where he won two Primeira Liga titles and nurtured rising stars like Viktor Gyokeres. However, his early days in Manchester have been anything but triumphant, with the club languishing in 15th place in the Premier League and fans growing increasingly restless.
Amorim’s win rate of just 43% is among the worst in Manchester United’s storied history, a stark contrast to Ten Hag’s 54.7% record during his time at the helm. The team’s recent 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in London has only added fuel to the fire, with critics pointing to tactical missteps and a lack of cohesion on the pitch. Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has been particularly vocal, suggesting that Amorim may have already lost the trust of the dressing room.
“I don’t think they are tuned in and believe everything. There must be an issue,” Keown said during an appearance on TalkSport. He highlighted Amorim’s decision to substitute striker Joshua Zirkzee after just 33 minutes in the Spurs match as a glaring error, arguing that the team needed an extra midfielder rather than two strikers. Keown also compared United’s decline to the resurgence of Everton under former United manager David Moyes, noting the stark contrast in results.
“This once-great club is now falling from a great height,” Keown lamented. “The panic button is close to being pressed. You can’t keep performing as they did against Spurs.”
Amorim’s tactical approach has come under heavy criticism, with pundits and fans alike questioning his midfield setup. The decision to leave Casemiro isolated in midfield allowed Tottenham’s James Maddison to dominate the game, while United captain Bruno Fernandes appeared lost and ineffective. These recurring issues have led to growing calls for Amorim’s dismissal, with many supporters fearing the club could face an unthinkable relegation battle if performances do not improve soon.
Manchester United’s next test comes on Saturday, when they travel to Goodison Park to face Everton. For Amorim, it could be a make-or-break moment as he seeks to turn the tide and salvage his reputation at one of the world’s most iconic football clubs. With the pressure mounting and the stakes higher than ever, the question remains: can Ruben Amorim survive the storm, or is his time at Old Trafford already running out?
