Ligue 1 giants PSG are reportedly eyeing a ‘shock move’ for Manchester United midfielder Fred despite his contract recently being extended by another year.
Fred has been criticised at times during his Man Utd career but up until this season, he has played regularly under different managers.
The £47m fee paid by Man Utd to sign Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2018 has proven to be a bit steep for a midfielder who has only impressed in fits and starts.
The Brazil international has fallen down the pecking order this season as he has only started four times in the Premier League.
Erik ten Hag has instead preferred to use summer signings Casemiro and Christian Eriksen in the middle of the park.
Despite this, Man Utd have opted to retain Fred for another year until 2023. His contract was due to be up next year but the club had the option to automatically extend his deal for a further year.
The Red Devils have done the same with Marcus Rashford, Diogo Dalot and Luke Shaw.
From the club’s perspective, this is a no-brainer. It either gives them more time to discuss a long-term deal or it affords them the ability to sell their player instead of losing them for nothing.
In Fred’s case, he could be sold. This is at least according to a recent report from The Sun.
They are reporting that French side PSG are ‘eyeing a shock transfer for Fred’.
His contract extension ‘has not deterred PSG’ as they are ‘long-term admirers’ of the centre-midfielder.
It is suggested that United’s asking price for Fred is £30m and that figure ‘certainly won’t put off mega-rich PSG’.
The report notes that Fred’s relationship with Brazil duo Neymar and Marquinhos could make the move appealing. You’d imagine he would also get a pay rise as well.
PSG have also been heavily linked with Rashford in recent months. The forward was expected to leave Man Utd in the summer after he struggled last season.
But the forward is one player who has benefitted from Ten Hag’s arrival in the summer as he is back playing with a smile on his face.
Rashford has been one of United’s best players this term as he has grabbed nine goals and three assists in 20 appearances.
PSG remain interested in him, though. Chief executive Nasser Al-Khelaifi admitted earlier this month that he would like to speak with Rashford.
“We’re not hiding it, we spoke before and… interest. But the moment was not a good moment for both sides. Maybe, summer, why not?
“Today if he’s a free agent of course we can talk to him directly but we are not going to talk to him now. Let him focus on the World Cup. Then after in January, hopefully, if we’re interested we will talk to him.”
