Referee Stops Play as Ligue 1 Grapples with Discriminatory Behavior
The Ligue 1 clash between Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Lyon on Sunday was briefly halted due to anti-gay chanting by sections of PSG fans at the Parc des Princes. Referee Benoît Bastien paused the game in the 53rd minute, with PSG leading 2-1, to address the issue.
In response, PSG captain Achraf Hakimi approached the Auteuil stand to urge fans to stop the chants. A warning was displayed on the stadium’s big screens, reminding attendees that discriminatory behavior could lead to severe consequences, including the match being suspended or forfeited.
Play Resumes Amid Ongoing Concerns
After a few minutes, play resumed, but the incident highlights an ongoing issue in French football, where anti-gay slurs at matches remain a persistent problem. Calls for stronger action against such behavior have intensified, with French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau suggesting earlier this year that matches should be halted in response to discriminatory chants.
A Troubling Pattern
This is not an isolated event. Anti-gay insults have been a recurring issue in Ligue 1, with previous incidents involving teams like Marseille and PSG. Earlier this month, a campaign group criticized authorities for allowing similar chants by Marseille fans during a game against Monaco.
In 2019, the French league introduced measures to combat discriminatory behavior, including a reporting system for fans to highlight sexist, homophobic, or racist abuse. Despite these efforts, the problem persists, with incidents escalating in recent months.
Sanctions and Legal Ramifications
French clubs have faced fines and stand closures in the past for similar behavior. The law provides for up to one year in prison and fines of €45,000 ($47,600) for public anti-gay insults. Last season, several PSG players, including Hakimi, received suspended sentences for offensive chants directed at Marseille after a match. While the players apologized, the broader issue of fan behavior remains unresolved.
This latest incident underscores the challenges Ligue 1 faces in eradicating discriminatory practices from the sport and ensuring stadiums remain inclusive spaces for all fans.
