PSG Ordered to Pay Kylian Mbappé €55M in Unpaid Wages and Bonuses

The French Football Association sides with Mbappé in bitter financial dispute with former club.

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) has been directed by the French Football Association (FFF) to pay their former star player, Kylian Mbappé, up to €55 million in unpaid wages and bonuses. This ruling marks the latest escalation in a contentious dispute between the Ligue 1 champions and the Real Madrid forward, which has spanned five months.

Ruling Favors Mbappé

The FFF’s decision upholds a previous ruling by the French League (LFP), which also supported Mbappé’s claim to the owed funds. PSG, however, had appealed the LFP’s decision, only to see their challenge dismissed.

The dispute originates from Mbappé’s decision in the summer of 2023 to reject an optional year in his PSG contract and move to Real Madrid as a free agent. His refusal to extend his stay at PSG reportedly frustrated the club’s hierarchy, who believed the player had verbally agreed to waive a loyalty bonus if he left for the Spanish giants.

However, no formal agreement on this matter was documented, adding to PSG’s difficulties in contesting the case.

A Long-Running Saga

Tensions between Mbappé and PSG came to a head in the summer of 2023 when the 25-year-old striker was excluded from training sessions and missed the opening game of the 2023/24 season. The standoff deepened as Mbappé finalized his move to Real Madrid, leaving PSG frustrated by what they saw as a breach of trust.

A private meeting between Mbappé and PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi further complicated matters, as the specifics of their discussion remain unclear—even Mbappé’s mother and agent, Fayza Lamari, were excluded from the talks.

Public Sentiment and Legal Challenges

The protracted dispute has affected Mbappé’s reputation in France, with public opinion turning against him. His decision to focus on settling at Real Madrid has also seen him miss four of France’s Nations League matches.

Despite the FFF’s ruling, PSG appears determined to pursue further legal options, potentially escalating the case to higher courts.

Mbappé’s Next Chapter

Now a Real Madrid player, Mbappé is focused on revitalizing his new club, which has had a challenging start to the season. While PSG’s legal battle continues, the forward’s attention remains on proving his worth on the pitch and moving past the acrimonious fallout with his former club.

The case highlights the complex nature of high-profile player contracts and the fallout that can arise when verbal agreements and written commitments do not align.
