PSG Reveal Why They Passed on Osimhen and Hint at Interest in Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal

Napoli’s High Demands for Osimhen Deterred PSG, While Barcelona’s Young Star Catches Their Eye

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) has revealed the reasons behind their decision not to sign Napoli striker Victor Osimhen during the summer transfer window, while hinting at potential interest in Barcelona’s rising star, Lamine Yamal.

Despite being linked with Osimhen alongside Premier League clubs Chelsea and Arsenal, PSG opted not to move forward with the deal. Reports suggested that the Parisian club had agreed to a lucrative €12 million-per-year salary package for Osimhen, but negotiations stalled due to Napoli’s insistence on his €130 million release clause—an amount PSG was unwilling to meet.

Speaking at the Thinking Football Summit in Portugal, PSG’s sporting director Luis Campos explained the club’s decision, stating: “Osimhen was considered as one of the possibilities, but we concluded that we were very satisfied with Goncalo Ramos, Kolo Muani, and Marco Asensio.”

As a result, Osimhen made a surprising loan move to Galatasaray instead of joining PSG.

Campos also expressed admiration for Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal, amid reports that PSG had made a €200 million bid for the 17-year-old talent. Yamal, who is contracted with Barcelona until 2026 and has a release clause of €1 billion, has been lauded by Campos alongside other PSG stars.

“Of course, I like Lamine Yamal, but also Ousmane Dembele, Bradley Barcola, Kang In-Lee, Marco Asensio, and Gonçalo Ramos. These are fantastic players with enormous quality,” Campos said. “To say that Lamine Yamal is not a great player would be a huge mistake. He is an excellent footballer, and I am very happy to see him playing at this level.”

While there was no indication of an imminent bid for Yamal, PSG has positioned itself to possibly pursue the young talent in the future should he decide to leave Barcelona. However, Yamal recently expressed his loyalty to the Catalan club, telling El Hormiguero: “I never want to leave Barca. I want to become a legend of this club.”

For now, PSG remains content with its current roster but appears to be keeping an eye on Yamal’s development.
