Ligue 1’s Fixture Decision Forces Players to Choose Between Awards and Le Classique
Paris Saint-Germain’s stars will be absent from Monday’s Ballon d’Or ceremony in Paris after their postponed match against Marseille was rescheduled at the same time as the awards gala.
The club’s highly anticipated Ligue 1 clash against their archrivals was called off Sunday due to severe weather warnings, only to be moved to Monday at 8:00 PM—directly conflicting with the sport’s most prestigious individual honors event.
As a result, nominees including manager Luis Enrique and players Vitinha, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, and Nuno Mendes will be playing at Stade Vélodrome instead of attending the ceremony. The only exception is Ousmane Dembélé—the Ballon d’Or favorite—who is injured and may accept any potential award without his teammates present.
PSG had pushed for an alternate kick-off time, but Marseille declined due to their congested fixture schedule. A regional official confirmed the club’s disappointment, stating, “They weren’t thrilled, but they accepted the decision.”
The situation underscores the often conflicting demands of modern football, where fixture congestion and extreme weather can overshadow moments of individual and collective celebration.
