The defending champions showcased their signature high-press and attacking flair in a commanding victory, sending a clear message to the rest of Europe.
Paris Saint-Germain began their Champions League title defense in spectacular fashion on Wednesday, delivering a statement performance with a resounding 4-0 victory over Atalanta at a buzzing Parc des Princes.
The match was effectively decided within the first three minutes. Captain Marquinhos set the tone, pressing high to win the ball before finishing off the very move he started to give the hosts a dream lead. The goal was a microcosm of PSG’s overall strategy: relentless pressure and lightning-fast combinations.
The home side never looked back, adding goals from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Nuno Mendes, and a late chip from substitute Goncalo Ramos to seal an emphatic win. While Bradley Barcola missed a penalty just before halftime, it was a mere blemish on an otherwise flawless evening for manager Luis Enrique’s squad.
“We prepared the match well and produced a very good performance to overcome Atalanta,” a pleased Luis Enrique said after the match. “It was a great evening, a very good way to start the competition and we are happy today.”
PSG’s fluidity and attacking intent were on full display throughout. After Marquinhos’ opener, the team continued to create a slew of chances. Mendes saw a clever effort whistle just wide, and Achraf Hakimi was denied by the post after a delightful backheel from Fabian Ruiz.
The Italian side, gradually finding its footing, was stunned just before halftime when Kvaratskhelia unleashed a thunderous strike to double the lead. Any hope of an Atalanta comeback was extinguished early in the second half when Mendes redeemed his earlier miss with a dazzling solo effort, fooling a defender before squeezing the ball in at the near post.
The only concern for PSG on an otherwise perfect night was an injury to midfielder Joao Neves, who limped off. His replacement, Goncalo Ramos, had the final say, coolly chipping the goalkeeper in added time after a defensive error.
PSG’s commanding start echoes their dominant 5-0 triumph over Inter Milan in last season’s final and sets a high bar for their upcoming fixtures. They next face a formidable test against Barcelona at Camp Nou on October 1st.
