Raheem Sterling Joins Arsenal on Season-Long Loan After Deadline Day Deal

Chelsea Winger Reunites with Mikel Arteta at Emirates Stadium

Chelsea winger Raheem Sterling has completed a season-long loan move to Arsenal, following a last-minute deal sheet submission that allowed the transfer to be finalized after the transfer deadline. The 29-year-old England international joins the Gunners after being sidelined by Chelsea’s new head coach, Enzo Maresca, who publicly stated his preference for a different type of winger.

Sterling was informed by Maresca that he would not be part of Chelsea’s plans this season, a decision made evident when he was excluded from their opening-day defeat to Manchester City on August 18 and left out of all subsequent match-day squads.

Sterling, who was a marquee signing during the early days of Todd Boehly’s ownership of Chelsea, joined the club for £47.5 million from Manchester City in the summer of 2022. Over two seasons at Stamford Bridge, he made 81 appearances and scored 19 goals. However, his move to Arsenal does not include an option or obligation to make the transfer permanent at the end of the loan.

The move to Arsenal reunites Sterling with manager Mikel Arteta, who served as assistant to Pep Guardiola during much of Sterling’s successful seven-year stint at Manchester City. Arteta, when asked about Sterling’s situation at Chelsea, spoke highly of his former player, highlighting the significance of this move in the context of Arsenal’s title ambitions.
