Brazilian Star Credits Hansi Flick for Revitalizing His Career Amid Transfer Speculation
Barcelona winger Raphinha has revealed that he seriously considered leaving the Catalan club last summer after a challenging season filled with criticism and uncertainty. In a candid interview with Globo, the 28-year-old Brazilian admitted that the constant media scrutiny and his struggles to meet expectations weighed heavily on him, prompting thoughts of a fresh start elsewhere.
Raphinha’s first season at Barcelona was far from smooth sailing. After joining from Leeds United in 2022, the Brazilian failed to consistently deliver on the pitch, leading to widespread speculation about his future. “My post-Copa America period was very turbulent,” Raphinha confessed. “Every day there was news that I was going one way or the other. I was also considering leaving Barcelona because it was something I didn’t feel comfortable with personally. Things weren’t working out.”
The turning point came with the arrival of new manager Hansi Flick, who reached out to Raphinha during a pivotal moment. “Hansi called me and told me to show up for training before making any decisions,” Raphinha recalled. “He said he wanted to talk and was counting on me. That was an important factor in my decision to stay.”
Flick’s faith in the winger has paid off handsomely. This season, Raphinha has undergone a remarkable transformation, becoming one of Barcelona’s standout performers. With 27 goals and 20 assists in 42 appearances across all competitions, he has emerged as a key figure for both club and country. His resurgence has even sparked whispers of a potential Ballon d’Or nomination if he maintains his scintillating form.
Despite his recent success, transfer rumors continue to swirl, with Manchester United among the clubs linked to the Brazilian. However, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has dismissed these speculations, stating there are “zero indications” of a move. Raphinha himself has made it clear that he sees his future at Barcelona, crediting Flick for reigniting his passion and confidence.
Reflecting on his conversation with his wife during the uncertain period, Raphinha shared, “I told her that if Hansi was a fair guy and saw the players’ performance in training, I would give him a week to like me as a player and that he wouldn’t regret it. I think it worked.”
Raphinha’s story is one of resilience and redemption. After a season of doubt and criticism, he has silenced his detractors and cemented his place as a vital cog in Barcelona’s machine. As he continues to shine on the international stage with Brazil, Raphinha’s journey serves as a reminder of the power of belief—both in oneself and from those who matter most.
