The English forward’s goal sealed a vital win for the Catalan club, but both he and his manager believe there’s another level to reach in front of goal.
Marcus Rashford was the man of the moment on Sunday, firing home a clinical strike to seal a 3-1 LaLiga victory for Barcelona against Elche. The win propelled the defending champions into second place, but manager Hansi Flick immediately set a new challenge for his in-form forward, suggesting he has the potential to be even more prolific.
The goal, a sharp finish from a tight angle, was Rashford’s sixth since making the surprise loan move from Manchester United in July. While the result strengthens Barcelona’s position in the title race, now just five points behind rivals Real Madrid, Flick’s post-match comments revealed a drive for perfection.
“When you see the chances he has, I think one or two goals more will be good, also for him,” Flick told reporters, acknowledging Rashford’s contribution while hinting at untapped potential. “I know that he can play on this level and I am happy he shows it… he is a very important player.”
Rashford himself was quick to agree with his manager’s assessment, showing a self-critical eye after the match. The 28-year-old admitted that his decision-making in the final third could have been sharper.
“Even today, I could have had more assists or goals,” Rashford confessed to Spanish media. “Sometimes the decision to shoot or pass was wrong. But I am going to have days like this. The important thing is always the team and today we won.”
He emphasized that his primary focus is on integrating with the squad and playing the right way, trusting that the goals and assists will follow naturally. “My focus is with the team, to build relationships and feel comfortable,” he explained.
The victory provides a boost of momentum as Barcelona now turns its attention to a crucial Champions League trip to Club Brugge on Wednesday, followed by a return to LaLiga action away at Celta Vigo next Sunday.
