Marcus Rashford’s long-term future is again up in the air, with reports from Spain suggesting his stint at Barcelona may end when his loan does. The Manchester United forward, who moved last summer, now faces a potential return to Old Trafford next season.
Barcelona secured Rashford on a temporary deal with a €30 million option to buy. While the England international started brightly, contributing six goals and seven assists, the Catalan club’s leadership appears to be having second thoughts. Recent reports indicate they are “not convinced” the investment is wise for a player who is 28 and commands a significant salary.
“We’re happy with him. He’s giving a lot to the team,” said Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, this week. However, he immediately cautioned, “Now is not the time to make any decisions.”
This hesitation aligns with earlier comments from transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who noted Barcelona planned to “take their time” on the decision, despite being pleased with Rashford’s attitude and performance.
The player’s situation has seemingly become less secure recently. A minor dip in form—no goals or assists in his last three games—combined with returning teammates from injury, has seen him slip down the pecking order. One Spanish report bluntly states he is now “closer to leaving than staying,” suggesting things would need to “change drastically” for Barcelona to trigger the purchase clause.
With a final decision not expected until May, Barcelona are reportedly already scouting younger, potentially less expensive alternatives. This leaves Rashford in a state of professional limbo and confirms Manchester United’s broader intent to reshape their attack, as the club remains committed to selling him in the coming years.
