French Starlet Focused on Germany Clash Before Sealing £25m Lyon Exit
Rayan Cherki has teased an imminent move to Manchester City, though the Lyon playmaker insists his full focus remains on France’s Nations League third-place playoff against Germany this Sunday.
The 21-year-old, one of Ligue 1’s most exciting talents, is expected to leave Lyon this summer, with City reportedly leading the chase ahead of late interest from Liverpool. Sources indicate the Premier League champions have already agreed personal terms with Cherki and are preparing to activate his £25 million release clause.
Speaking after France’s thrilling 5-4 semi-final defeat to Spain on Thursday, Cherki dropped his clearest hint yet that a switch to the Etihad is close. “Yes… it’s getting done,” he told Telefoot with a smile. “But you already know my answer, everybody knows. There’s still a game to play. Now we have to enjoy and give everything—but after, it will be done.”
Despite entering as a second-half substitute against Spain, Cherki made an instant impact on his senior France debut. His pinpoint cross set up Randal Kolo Muani’s goal, and he nearly crafted another with a chance that saw Ousmane Dembélé strike the post.
City are working swiftly to finalize the deal, with reports suggesting medicals for Wolves’ Rayan Ait-Nouri and AC Milan’s Tijjani Reijnders are also being arranged. If completed by June 10, Cherki could feature in this summer’s Club World Cup—adding another dynamic attacker to Pep Guardiola’s star-studded squad.
For now, though, the youngster’s mind is set on ending France’s Nations League campaign on a high. After that, a new chapter in Manchester likely awaits.
