Spanish Giants Willing to Pay Fee to Secure Liverpool Star Ahead of Summer Tournament, as Reds Risk Losing Key Players
Real Madrid are reportedly preparing to make a bold move for Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold, with the Spanish giants eager to secure the England international before their Club World Cup campaign kicks off in mid-June. The 26-year-old right-back, whose contract at Anfield expires on June 30, has yet to agree to a new deal with Liverpool, leaving the door open for a potential free transfer this summer.
According to The Sun, Real Madrid are keen to bring Alexander-Arnold to the Bernabeu in time for their Club World Cup opener against Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal on June 18. The Champions League holders are even rumored to be willing to pay Liverpool a fee to release the defender from the final weeks of his contract, ensuring he can join their squad for the tournament in the United States.
This isn’t the first time Real Madrid have shown interest in Alexander-Arnold. The Spanish club reportedly made a £20 million bid for the Liverpool vice-captain at the start of the winter transfer window, but the offer was rejected. Since then, they have been biding their time, hoping to sign him as a free agent ahead of the 2024/25 season. However, with the Club World Cup on the horizon, Real Madrid are now exploring ways to fast-track the deal.
FIFA rules could still allow Alexander-Arnold to join Real Madrid for the latter stages of the tournament, even if an early agreement isn’t reached. The governing body’s “exceptional window” permits Club World Cup teams to add two players to their squad between June 27 and July 3. This means Alexander-Arnold could potentially feature in the knockout stages if Real Madrid progress.
Despite the growing speculation, Liverpool manager Arne Slot remains hopeful that Alexander-Arnold will commit his future to the club. The homegrown star has been a key figure for the Reds this season, contributing three goals and seven assists in 37 appearances across all competitions. Since breaking into the first team, Alexander-Arnold has amassed an impressive 22 goals and 87 assists in 347 matches, cementing his status as one of the Premier League’s most influential defenders.
However, Alexander-Arnold isn’t the only Liverpool star facing an uncertain future. Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk are also entering the final months of their contracts, with both players free to negotiate pre-contract agreements with foreign clubs. Van Dijk has remained calm about his situation, dismissing rumors of an already-agreed extension, while Salah has hinted that this season could be his “last” at Anfield, though he is reportedly open to staying under the right conditions.
As Liverpool prepare for their Premier League clash with Southampton this weekend, the focus on the pitch remains strong. But off the pitch, the clock is ticking for the club to resolve the contract situations of their star players, with Real Madrid circling and the summer transfer window fast approaching. For Alexander-Arnold, the coming weeks could define the next chapter of his career—whether it’s at Anfield or the Bernabeu.
