Benfica President Reveals Transfer Talks at “Standstill” as Left-Back Prepares for Club World Cup
Real Madrid’s otherwise smooth summer transfer window has hit an unexpected snag in their pursuit of Benfica left-back Álvaro Carreras, despite the 22-year-old already agreeing to personal terms with the Spanish giants.
A Deal in Limbo
While Los Blancos have already secured high-profile signings like Dean Huijsen, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Franco Mastantuono, negotiations for Carreras have stalled. Benfica president Rui Costa confirmed the impasse, telling Record:
“There were bids for the player, but we didn’t reach any agreement with Real Madrid. Carreras will play in the Club World Cup, and then we’ll see. Right now, the market is at a standstill—both for departures and arrivals.”
The young defender, who joined Benfica permanently from Manchester United for just €6 million in May, could now command a significantly higher fee after his strong performances.
Player Ready, Clubs Not Aligned
Despite the hiccup, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano maintains that Carreras is eager on the move, stating on X: “Negotiations will continue as personal terms are 100% agreed.”
Real Madrid had hoped for a straightforward deal given their strong relationship with Benfica, but Costa’s comments suggest the Portuguese club are in no rush to sell. With Carreras set to feature in the upcoming Club World Cup, his value could rise even further—forcing Madrid to either increase their offer or wait patiently for a breakthrough.
For now, the left-back remains focused on the pitch while his future hangs in the balance. One thing is clear: this transfer saga is far from over.
