Star forward sidelined for three weeks with hamstring injury, Ancelotti sticks to tactical plan for Atletico clash.
Real Madrid received a significant setback on Wednesday after it was confirmed that Kylian Mbappé will miss the next three weeks due to a hamstring injury. The French forward had complained of muscle discomfort during Los Blancos’ 3-2 victory over Alavés, and scans revealed the extent of the damage. His absence will be felt deeply in Sunday’s highly anticipated Madrid derby against Atletico Madrid.
Despite Mbappé’s absence, manager Carlo Ancelotti is reportedly sticking to his tactical plan. According to Marca, the Italian coach plans to revert to the four-midfielder formation that brought success last season, with Jude Bellingham expected to make driving runs from deep. In attack, Rodrygo Goes will step in to partner with Vinícius Junior up front.
In midfield, Aurelien Tchouaméni, Fede Valverde, and Bellingham are guaranteed starters, but there remains uncertainty over the fourth midfield spot. Eduardo Camavinga, recovering from a knee issue, will return to training on Thursday. Ancelotti will assess his fitness before deciding whether to include him in the squad. If Camavinga is deemed unfit, veteran Luka Modric will slot in.
Modric, though a different player from Camavinga, offers Ancelotti greater ball retention and incisive passing, while the Frenchman’s physicality and ability to win back possession would favor a more aggressive, vertical approach.
