Los Blancos Chase Liverpool Legend as Alonso Emerges as Backup Option
Real Madrid have intensified their efforts to appoint Jurgen Klopp as their next manager following confirmation that Carlo Ancelotti will depart the Bernabeu – but the Spanish giants face an uphill battle to land their top target.
Ancelotti’s glittering second spell in charge, which delivered two Champions League trophies and a LaLiga title, is set to end after a disappointing season that saw Real Madrid fall short domestically and crash out of Europe to Arsenal. Reports now indicate the 65-year-old has agreed to take over Brazil’s national team, with Saturday’s Copa del Rey final defeat to Barcelona potentially marking his last game in the dugout.
With a vacancy looming, Madrid president Florentino Perez has reportedly made two direct approaches to Klopp in recent days, while future presidential candidate Anas Laghari has also identified the German as his “first choice.” However, Klopp’s camp has swiftly dismissed the speculation.
“Jurgen is very happy with his new role as Head of Global Soccer at Red Bull,” agent Marc Kosicke told Sky Germany, adding that the former Liverpool boss has no plans to return to management before the 2025/26 season.
Klopp’s next move remains uncertain, with international management reportedly appealing to him. Roles with Germany, the USA, or even England could tempt him away from club football, leaving Madrid to explore alternatives.
Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso has now emerged as the frontrunner, with talks already underway. A €15m-€20m release clause in Alonso’s contract could smooth negotiations, though the Spaniard remains coy on his future.
“When there’s something to decide, we’ll be direct,” Alonso said, emphasizing his strong relationship with Leverkusen’s hierarchy. “There’s no pressure on timing.”
As Madrid brace for a new era, Ancelotti is expected to take charge of Brazil by June, though his deal may not be long-term. For now, the managerial merry-go-round is in full swing – but Klopp’s stance suggests Madrid may have to wait for their dream appointment.
