Contract Talks Stall as Star Defender’s Future Hangs in the Balance
Real Madrid is reportedly reconsidering their pursuit of Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold, as the 26-year-old defender’s future remains uncertain. With his current contract at Anfield set to expire in June 2025, the England international has been at the center of speculation linking him to a potential move to the Santiago Bernabéu.
The Spanish giants have been eyeing Alexander-Arnold as a long-term replacement for Dani Carvajal, who is sidelined with an ACL injury. Despite their interest, reports suggest Real Madrid may limit their efforts to securing a pre-contract agreement in January rather than pursuing an immediate transfer.
Contract Talks Stagnate
According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Liverpool is working to secure a contract extension for Alexander-Arnold but has yet to reach an agreement.
“The England international has shown firm loyalty to Liverpool, but so far, no breakthrough in talks. This uncertainty has fueled interest from elsewhere, including Real Madrid,” Ornstein explained.
From January 1, Alexander-Arnold will be free to negotiate with foreign clubs, putting added pressure on Liverpool to finalize an extension.
“Big decisions need to be made soon, and the clock is ticking. Both Liverpool and interested clubs like Real Madrid must act decisively, but as of now, the outcome is far from clear,” Ornstein added.
A Local Legend’s Legacy
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher weighed in on the situation, emphasizing the pressure Alexander-Arnold faces as a local player.
“When you’re a local lad, a lot more is expected of you. Trent knows that leaving Liverpool on a free transfer would invite criticism,” Carragher told CBS Sports.
He added, “Trent has won everything with Liverpool, and the legacy he’s built is priceless. I think that connection with the club and the city will ultimately push him to stay and sign a new deal.”
Real Madrid’s Plans
While Real Madrid remains interested, reports from TEAMtalk suggest the club will not make a move during the winter transfer window. Instead, they may focus on securing Alexander-Arnold on a pre-contract agreement for the summer.
For now, Liverpool remains committed to keeping their star right-back, but the coming months will determine whether Alexander-Arnold’s Anfield legacy continues or if he embarks on a new chapter in Madrid.
