Real Madrid Reportedly Closing In on Trent Alexander-Arnold Signing

Liverpool’s Plan to Retain Star Defender Reportedly Backfires as Real Madrid Make Their Move

Real Madrid are reportedly on the brink of securing a deal to sign Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold, according to a fresh report from The Sun. The report suggests that a plan initiated by Liverpool over two years ago to retain the right-back has backfired, with the English defender now edging closer to a move to Spain.

Alexander-Arnold is one of three key Liverpool players—alongside Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah—whose contracts are set to expire at the end of the current season. While the Reds risk losing all three to free agency, it is Real Madrid’s interest in Alexander-Arnold that has raised the most concern.

The report points to the influence of Jude Bellingham, a close friend of Alexander-Arnold, as a key factor in the potential move. Liverpool had initially tasked Alexander-Arnold with helping to persuade Bellingham to sign with the club as part of a long-term plan to rejuvenate their midfield. However, Bellingham ultimately rejected Liverpool’s advances and opted to join Real Madrid in the summer of 2023.

Now, the relationship between Bellingham and Alexander-Arnold could come back to haunt Liverpool, as the Real Madrid midfielder is reportedly playing a role in convincing the right-back to make the switch to the Bernabéu. With Real Madrid’s Dani Carvajal sidelined by a season-ending ACL injury, the Spanish giants are expected to ramp up their pursuit of a replacement.

Although The Sun claims Alexander-Arnold is “on the verge” of joining Real Madrid, other reports suggest the deal is not yet finalized. Football Insider states that Liverpool are still “hopeful” their vice-captain will sign a new contract and remain at Anfield.

While a January move has been speculated, Real Madrid are reportedly more interested in securing Alexander-Arnold as a free agent next summer. The coming months will be critical as Liverpool work to retain one of their most influential players.
