With Contract Extension Talks in Limbo, Real Madrid Prepares Strategic Move as Deadline Approaches
Real Madrid’s long-standing pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) star Kylian Mbappé is still on hold, but the clock is ticking, and president Florentino Pérez has a crucial date circled on his calendar: January 1, 2024. As the days wind down towards the deadline, Mbappé has yet to renew his contract with PSG, which officially expires on June 30 next year. Real Madrid remains poised, holding off on any moves until January 1, contingent upon Mbappé refraining from extending his contract with PSG and its influential Qatari owners.
Come January 1, Madrid plans to launch a decisive offensive for Kylian, leveraging the law to support their negotiation endeavors, rendering PSG powerless to intervene. This strategic move has precedence since January 1, 2022, when Mbappé stalled negotiations, citing concerns about a backlash from PSG ultras.
In a bid to avoid a repeat of history, Real Madrid is taking a calculated approach. On January 1, when contacting Fayza Lamari, Mbappé’s mother and the key figure behind his contracts, the club will set a 15-day deadline for a response to their offer. There will be no room for doubts or prolonged exchanges, and Mbappé will have 15 days to declare his stance.
Real Madrid is wary of verbal agreements and trusts that 15 days provide sufficient time for the Parisian star to make a definitive decision. Failure to sign a renewal with PSG by the end of 2023 would signal Mbappé’s serious intent to move on. The club is banking on Lamari’s lawyer receiving the offer, and if Mbappé accepts with a reduced wage compared to PSG, Real Madrid can proceed with confidence for the remainder of the season.
Real Madrid’s pursuit of Kylian Mbappé dates back to 2017, with multiple unsuccessful attempts to lure him away from Parc des Princes. However, the approaching age of 25 for Mbappé has prompted Real Madrid to consider alternatives. If Mbappé hesitates beyond the January 15 deadline, the club has a Plan B in place: Erling Haaland. The Norwegian, open to joining his friend Jude Bellingham, has a house in Marbella and offers Madrid a contingency plan should the Mbappé pursuit falter.
