Real Madrid’s Xabi Alonso Condemns LaLiga’s U.S. Match Plan

Manager joins player protests, calling the decision to move a Barcelona game to Miami a distortion of the competition that lacked approval.

Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso has publicly condemned LaLiga’s decision to host a league match in the United States, aligning himself with players who are actively protesting the move.

The Spanish football governing body announced that the Villarreal vs. Barcelona fixture on December 20th will be played in Miami, making it the first European league game held abroad. In response, the Spanish Footballers’ Association (AFE) initiated protests, which saw players from clubs like Oviedo and Espanyol stage a brief, stationary boycott at the start of their matches.

Alonso did not mince words in his support for the dissent. “We are against the match; we believe it distorts the competition,” he stated at a news conference. He criticized the lack of consensus, adding, “The protests are positive… We believe it could happen if there were unanimity, but that’s not the case.”

In other team news, Alonso confirmed that striker Kylian Mbappe, who has been nursing an ankle injury, is expected to be available for Real Madrid’s upcoming match against Getafe.
