Barcelona’s 1-0 defeat to Real Sociedad on Sunday saw manager Hansi Flick and Blaugrana fans left fuming over a highly disputed offside decision that denied Robert Lewandowski an early equalizer. The incident, occurring just 13 minutes in, saw VAR rule that Lewandowski’s foot was marginally offside, resulting in his goal being disallowed. The decision, based on semi-automated offside technology, sparked outrage among Barcelona supporters who believed that defender Nayef Aguerd’s foot was actually further back, and therefore should have kept Lewandowski onside.
Flick, visibly frustrated, later revealed a conversation with the Spanish referee regarding the decision, which he claimed did little to clarify the matter. “It’s still not clear to us how VAR reached that conclusion. The replay shows something entirely different,” he remarked post-match.
The disallowed goal was especially disappointing for Barcelona, who struggled to create chances in the absence of teenage talent Lamine Yamal, ultimately failing to land a single shot on target. With pressure mounting in La Liga, Flick’s side now looks to regroup during the international break, hoping to come back stronger and more decisive.
