Nigerian Star Urges Afrobeats Unity in Emotional Speech, Burna Boy and Shallipopi Also Triumph
Sunday night in Lagos belonged to Rema, as the 25-year-old superstar swept three of the biggest honors at the 9th All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA), solidifying his status as one of the continent’s most influential artists.
Held at the Eko Hotels Convention Centre, the ceremony saw the Mavin Records artist claim the titles of Best Male Artiste in Western Africa, Artiste of the Year, and Best African Artiste in RnB/Soul for his global hit “Calm Down.” He triumphed in fiercely competitive categories that included industry giants Burna Boy, Davido, and Wizkid.
“It is beautiful to be here again and still receiving awards seven years in the game,” Rema told the audience, reflecting on his journey since his 2019 debut. His speech quickly turned toward the future of the genre, echoing his viral 2023 Headies message. He urged fellow artists to support African-owned platforms and protect the unity of Afrobeats on the global stage.

“I always think it’s important to always support our utilities of Afrobeats. Our platforms,” he said. “Especially platforms that would not divide or put down or split this unity that we have in the room.”
The awards night also celebrated other heavyweights. Burna Boy won Album of the Year for “No Sign of Weakness,” while Shallipopi took home Song of the Year for “Laho.”
Rema’s triple triumph marks a major milestone in a career already defined by groundbreaking international success, signaling both his commercial dominance and his growing role as a thoughtful voice for the industry’s future.
