Report claims Arsenal have been told they can sign Barcelona forward for just £17m this summer

Barcelona forward Memphis Depay, who has been linked with a move to Arsenal, could be available for just £17m this summer, according to reports.

The Dutch forward only join the club last summer, joining on a free transfer from French side Lyon.

He initially started well, working under former Dutch national side boss Ronald Koeman, and was a shining light in hat was a poor first-half of the season for the Spanish giants.

However, since Xavi was brought in to take charge at the Camp Nou, Depay’s influence has dwindled.

Injuries and the fact that three more forwards were brought in in January has seen the Dutchman’s game time decrease and he could be set for a summer departure just 12 months of from arriving in Barcelona.

Arsenal have been heavily linked with the 28-year-old as they look to improve their striking options following the loss of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who was one of the three forwards signed by Barca in January.

Numerous centre-forwards have been linked with a move to join Mikel Arteta’s side this summer including Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Darwin Nunez of Benfica.

And whilst Depay is certainly not an out-and-out centre forward, his versatility could be useful to an Arsenal squad that narrowly missed out on a top four finish this season.

And they could be able to get him on the cheap, with Spanish media outlet Sport claiming that he will be available for just £17m this summer as Barcelona look to balance their finances yet again.

The report also claims that the Spanish side, who finished second in La Liga this season, are interested in bringing in two forwards this summer.

Therefore, any potential sale of Depay may be reliant on Barca being able to bring in suitable replacements.

If Depay does make a move to Arsenal, it would mark his return to Premier League football following his departure from Manchester United in 2017.

It never worked out for the forward at Old Trafford, but after rebuilding his career ay Lyon, he looks better placed to be a success in English football than before.
