Rio Ferdinand Backs Pogba’s Return to Old Trafford Amid Uncertainty

The former United captain urges a chance for the World Cup winner to train and prove himself again despite no official deal yet

Former Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has voiced his support for a potential return of Paul Pogba to Old Trafford, now that the French midfielder has been cleared to play following the reduction of his doping ban. In a candid interview on Rio Presents, Ferdinand expressed his belief that Pogba deserves another shot at the club where he once dazzled fans.

Pogba, 31, was initially banned for up to four years after accepting responsibility for taking a supplement without thoroughly checking its source. In a tell-all interview in 2024, he said, “I accept responsibility, but it should never have been four years. I will accept 12 months.” His ban was subsequently reduced to 18 months, and with his suspension lifting in March, he is now a free agent.

Having spent six memorable years at United before moving to Juventus in 2022, Pogba’s future remains uncertain. Although his representatives had a friendly connection with Wilcox from Manchester City’s academy, official talks for a third spell at Old Trafford have not materialized. United, under their new ownership, are focused on signing younger, more cost-effective talent and shedding high-wage contracts.

Ferdinand, however, is intrigued by the prospect of seeing Pogba return. “You’d like to think he would go somewhere,” he said. “Surely he’s got to go somewhere. Pogba at United? I’d come in and train with us and let’s see what you’ve got. I would’ve done that already. I’d say come in, get fit, and let’s have a little look.” His remarks, laced with humor, even mentioned that “Stormzy could be doing a little verse for the video now,” underscoring the excitement among fans about a possible reunion.

While Pogba is focused on regaining his fitness on his own terms, his potential return to Manchester United remains a subject of lively debate. With his contract expiring soon and United eyeing a new recruitment strategy that moves away from costly wages, the decision will likely come down to whether Pogba can prove he still has the magic to light up the Premier League once more.

For now, the football world waits with bated breath as one of the game’s most charismatic figures considers his next move.
