Former England defender believes Tuchel will lead the Three Lions to tournament glory.
Rio Ferdinand has responded to criticism surrounding the appointment of Thomas Tuchel as England’s new manager, confidently predicting that the German coach will bring home a trophy for the Three Lions. Tuchel, who has won league titles with Bayern Munich and PSG and the Champions League with Chelsea in 2021, has signed an 18-month contract worth £5 million per year to succeed Gareth Southgate.
The Football Association (FA) has faced backlash for overlooking English candidates like Graham Potter and Newcastle United’s Eddie Howe, but Ferdinand dismissed concerns about the nationality of the new manager. “You want the best to do it,” he said, emphasizing that fans won’t care about Tuchel’s background if he brings success.
Ferdinand praised Tuchel’s tournament experience, citing his Champions League victory with Chelsea as evidence of his ability to navigate high-stakes football. He also highlighted the strength of England’s current squad, describing them as “young, vibrant, confident, and aggressive,” and suggested that Tuchel could be the leader to finally deliver silverware.
“I’ll go as far as to say Thomas Tuchel will win England a tournament during his time as manager,” Ferdinand boldly predicted, expressing optimism about England’s future under the new leadership.
