Rio Ferdinand Urges Rashford to Defend Himself Against Amorim’s Stinging Comments

United Legend Calls on Rashford to Hit Back After Manager Questions His Commitment

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has rallied behind Marcus Rashford, urging the forward to respond decisively to stinging criticism from United manager Ruben Amorim. The comments have stirred controversy, adding fuel to speculation about Rashford’s future at Old Trafford.

Last month, Rashford, 27, was left out of United’s squad for the Manchester derby against City, and he hasn’t featured for the team since. Adding to the drama, the England international recently told journalist Henry Winter that he’s considering a “new challenge,” hinting at a potential exit from the club.

The situation escalated further after United’s narrow 1-0 win over Fulham on Sunday, when Amorim claimed he would rather have his 63-year-old goalkeeping coach on the bench than Rashford.

Reacting to these remarks, Ferdinand didn’t mince words during his podcast, urging Rashford to hit back publicly.

“If I were that player, my pride, my ego, my heart—everything would be wounded by those comments,” Ferdinand said. “For someone to question your effort, to suggest you’re taking shortcuts or not giving 100 percent for your team, that’s a massive insult.”

“No Way Back”

Ferdinand described Amorim’s comments as a “damning” critique, signaling a potential point of no return for Rashford at United. “The manager isn’t saying this without knowing where it leads,” Ferdinand added. “After a comment like that, it’s hard to see a way back for Marcus at this club.”

The former United defender called on Rashford to defend his reputation, even suggesting legal action if the claims aren’t true.

“If it isn’t true, and it was me, I’d be coming out all guns blazing,” Ferdinand continued. “I’d hold a press conference and say, ‘I’m not having anyone question my effort.’ If you’re confident in your work ethic, you’ve got to speak up.”

A Test of Character

Ferdinand also challenged Rashford to reflect on his performance and professionalism. “I’d want to sit across from Marcus and ask, ‘Can you confidently say you’ve given your all?’ If you can, then fight back. If not, then it’s time to look inward.”

As Rashford’s future remains uncertain, Ferdinand’s passionate defense highlights the growing tension within United’s dressing room. The team returns to action on Thursday night against FCSB in the UEFA Europa League, but the spotlight remains firmly on Rashford and Amorim’s strained relationship.

With transfer rumors swirling and tensions high, all eyes will be on Rashford to see how he responds—on and off the pitch.
