Midfielder Fumes Over Disallowed Foul Call in Dramatic Comeback, Insists City Will “Keep Fighting”
Frustration boiled over for Manchester City captain Rodri following a dramatic 2-2 draw with Tottenham, with the midfielder launching a pointed critique of the match officials after a controversial goal spurred Spurs’ comeback.
Facing a depleted Tottenham side missing nine senior players, City appeared in control with a 2-0 halftime lead from goals by Rayan Cherki and Antoine Semenyo. The match turned early in the second half, however, when striker Dominic Solanke pressured defender Marc Guéhi, leading to an own goal.
Rodri argued passionately that the goal should have been disallowed. “We are frustrated because it’s so clear the foul. He kicked [Guéhi’s] leg,” a visibly emotional Rodri stated after the match.
“We work so hard, and these little actions make a difference. They cannot make a difference, but today unfortunately it did.”
The Spanish international emphasized the cumulative impact of such decisions, adding, “I’m not saying the level of refereeing here is bad… but we have to pay attention. It’s not just one [mistake]… but two, three, four in a row, it’s not possible.”
The draw, coupled with Arsenal’s victory a day earlier, pushes City six points adrift of the Premier League summit. While acknowledging the setback, Rodri insisted the squad’s spirit remains unbroken. “It’s not damaging,” he claimed. “We expect to win here, but we’re still going to put our arms down and keep fighting until the end because that is our identity.”
City must quickly regroup for a demanding week, hosting Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup semifinal on Wednesday before a pivotal league clash at Liverpool next Sunday. For Rodri and his teammates, the fight continues, but the sting of two dropped points in North London lingers.
