After ACL Injury, Ballon d’Or Winner Eyes Club World Cup Return While Weighing Future Plans
Manchester City star Rodri has raised fans’ hopes by revealing he could return to play this season despite an ACL injury that initially seemed to rule him out until next year. Rodri, who recently won the Ballon d’Or, has been sidelined since his injury in the September 22 clash with Arsenal. The influential midfielder’s absence has contributed to City’s current four-game losing streak — a rare dip for manager Pep Guardiola, marking the longest losing run in his coaching career.
Though Guardiola initially indicated Rodri wouldn’t return until next season, the 28-year-old Spaniard is now hopeful for an earlier comeback. The extended season, which includes the FIFA Club World Cup in the U.S. this June and July, has Rodri optimistic about the possibility of rejoining the squad before the season’s close.
“The seasons are getting longer, and this one has the Club World Cup,” Rodri noted. “It’s good to have a challenge, and I have it in my head to return this season — we’ll see when.”
Rodri’s long-term contract with Manchester City runs until 2027, and while he remains committed to his recovery, he hasn’t ruled out a potential return to Spain in the future. “Renewal with City is not my priority right now. I want to recover, and we’ll see. I have a contract and I’m very, very happy. But I see the Spanish league, and I’m not closing doors,” he shared, hinting at openness to new opportunities.
Rodri’s next steps could depend in part on Guardiola’s own plans. The celebrated manager’s contract is up at the end of the season, and speculation around his future is growing. Reflecting on his time under Guardiola, Rodri said with a smile, “When I signed, I was told he would leave the following year… and we are still like that five years later.”
As City eyes a turnaround in their season, Rodri’s potential return could be crucial in their pursuit of success on multiple fronts.
